WNBA player Brittney Griner was arrested in Russia in February after Russian authorities found e-cigarettes and cannabis oil in her purse.

In July, she was then sentenced to nine years in prison and fined before the sentence was appealed.

The White House has previously announced that they are doing what they can to bring home the Phoenix Mercury player, and now US President Joe Biden has met with Griner's family, as well as the family of Paul Whelan, a former Marine who was sentenced to 16 years in prison for espionage.

"The president appreciated the opportunity to learn more about Brittney and Paul from those who love them most, and made it clear that every minute they are stuck there is a minute too long," White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement, according to CNN.

Exchanges letters with wife

Brittney Griner's wife, Cherelle Griner, tells CNN that she appreciated the meeting with Biden, and that they feel they are doing the right thing.

She also says that she has, via an exchange of letters with her wife, received worrying reports.

- She is not feeling well.

We've had some very disturbing communication, where she's venting about how she's feeling right now, and it's gotten to the point where I'm very concerned.

She's losing it.

We have reached the time where even a strong person becomes like that, "Honey, I don't know how long I can handle this," she says.
