Germany's best tennis player Angelique Kerber is pregnant.

This was confirmed by the management of the 2018 Wimbledon winner of the FAZ on Wednesday.

Together with her partner, the entrepreneur Franco Bianco, the 34-year-old is expecting her first child in spring 2023.

Kerber is now not participating in the US Open in New York, which begins this Monday.

After the cancellation of Alexander Zverev due to injury, the best German is also missing among the women.

Kerber wants to go to the Olympics in Paris

"I really intended to play the US Open," Kerber wrote on Twitter and Instagram on Wednesday afternoon.

"But then I decided that two against one is simply not fair competition." The native of Bremen had played her last tournament so far at Wimbledon, where she was eliminated in round three.

According to her management, Kerber wants to continue her tennis career after pregnancy and childbirth.

She still has one big goal: to take part in the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

Kerber does not want to miss the summer games in the neighboring country.

In 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, the three-time Grand Slam winner won the silver medal, in Tokyo 2021 she did not start due to an injury.

"It means everything to me to be a professional athlete, but I'm grateful for the new path I'm taking now," wrote Kerber: "To be honest, I'm nervous and excited at the same time."

Unlike in the past, there are now several mothers on the WTA professional tour.

The most prominent of them is certainly Serena Williams, who will end her great career after the US Open.

The German Tatjana Maria, mother of two daughters, had shone in Wimbledon by reaching the semi-finals.
