The 27-year-old Frenchman, 73rd player in the world, dominated in the final Étienne Bacrot, the most successful player at the national level.

Jules Moussard therefore wins the French championship which was held for the first time since 2019 but in the absence of the two best French players Alireza Firouzja and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave.

Jules Moussard was crowned French chess champion for the first time on Sunday in Albi, after defeating the most successful national player, Étienne Bacrot, in the final.

Moussard, 27 and 73rd in the world, defeated the eight-time French champion in sudden death (Armageddon), when the two men were tied after two long, fast and then ultra-fast games ("blitz ").

Disputed for the first time since 2019, but in the absence of the two best French players, Alireza Firouzja and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, the French championship brought together the five players who represented France at the Chess Olympiad in July, in India.

France had placed thirteenth in the most prestigious team competition.
