Leicester City extends the contract of top scorer Vardy and cuts the way for Man United

Leicester City extended the contract of its historic striker Jamie Vardy, cutting the way for Man United, who wanted to include the player.

Vardy led Leicester to the league title in 2016, and his new contract runs until 2024. The 35-year-old former international striker said he felt "like furniture" for the club he joined in 2012 from submerged Fleetwood.

He scored 133 goals in the Premier League in 272 matches, including 24 in the 2016 season, when Italian coach Claudio Ranieri's squad defied all expectations to win the title.

"I'm over the moon, of course," said the 164 goalscorer in 387 matches in various competitions. "When I knew the club wanted it, I could only sign and it was an easy decision."

Vardy's contract was due to expire in 2023 and his name was linked to a move to Manchester United.

Vardy, who also won the Cup with Leicester in 2021, became the league's top scorer in the 2020 season with 23 goals, and scored 7 goals in 26 appearances with the England national team between 2015 and 2018.
