In the semi-finals, the Australian Nick Kyrgios knocked out Mikael Ymer when he won in straight sets.

In the final against Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka, he impressed again with his serves and won 6-4, 6-3.

The last time he won an ATP tournament was also in Washington, but a full three years ago.

Earlier this summer, he reached the final at Wimbledon and has thus shown a continuity that he previously had difficulty with.

- I feel that my motivation is much higher than before.

It's a small window and I should capitalize on it, he says after his seventh title on the ATP tour.

Later in the evening he also won the doubles tournament together with his partner Jack Sock.

They defeated Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek 7-5, 6-4 in the final.

Kyrgios has often been criticized for his many outbursts on the tennis court, not infrequently against the referees.

- I don't care what people say about my tennis.

That I don't show respect for the sport and such.

Deep down I know that I am trying very hard to do this my way and that I am inspiring millions of people.

I only play for them, he says.

The victory means that Kyrgios is now 37th in the world ranking ahead of the US Open, which begins on August 29.
