At the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham (United Kingdom), the Australian team won the women's cricket tournament against India on Sunday.

The victory, however, was criticized by many Indian observers.

The reason ?

Tahlia McGrath, one of Australia's best players, was allowed to play despite testing positive for Covid a few hours before, explains RMC Sport.

Lol, Australia banned a negative @DjokerNole but allows a Covid positive player to play cricket..

Hypocrites of the highest order.

The right decision as Covid is not a disease that's killing people now, but a hypocritical one none the less.

Embarrassing.https://t.co/UsE7hicWnD

“Hypocrisy” and “racism”

As a precaution, the sportswoman was however forced to sit far from her teammates and had to wear a mask.

It is thus not the health risk taken that has been denounced by Indian media, but rather a certain Australian “hypocrisy”.

The country is indeed applying strict anti-Covid measures on its territory.

They notably led to the exclusion of Novak Djokovic from the Australian Tennis Open last January.

But in the UK, the self-isolation rules are advisory only.

The organizers were therefore able to arbitrate freely.

Additionally, some fans claimed it was a "racist" decision.

According to them, if an Indian player had been infected, then the selection would have been excluded from the final.

Asked about it, Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur however indicated that their team agreed with the decision of the organizers to let Thalia McGrath play.

“We had to show sportsmanship.

I'm glad we didn't say no to Tahlia, missing the final would have been very hard for her,” she said, mentioning the fact that “she wasn't very sick”.

A remark that did not calm the critics.
