Newly promoted Fulham hosted last year's Premier League runners-up Liverpool at Craven Cottage in London.

After just under a quarter of an hour, Liverpool winger Luiz Diaz curled a ball into the crossbar, but it was correctly ruled out for offside on full-back Andy Robertson in the sequence before.

Fulham successfully invested in long high balls and counter attacks in the first half.

And in the 32nd minute came the payoff.

Attacking ace Aleksandar Mitrovic won a header duel with Trent Alexander-Arnold at the far post and easily headed home 1-0 to newcomers Fulham.

Nunez was substituted

Shortly afterwards, Diaz hit the post for Liverpool, but the Merseyside team got no closer than that and Fulham could deservedly go into the break in the lead.

In the second half, Fulham came out and continued on the beaten path, extending their lead when Neeskens Kebano's finish hit the inside of the post.

Five minutes into the second half, Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp threw on Darwin Nunez to chase an equaliser.

It had an immediate effect and Liverpool slowly worked their way into the match.

In the 64th minute, Nunez beautifully made it 1-1, assisted by Mohamed Salah.

Henderson in the crossbar

However, the joy was short-lived.

Mitrovic received a penalty after a duel with Virgil van Dijk.

He took care of it himself and placed distinctly in the net to make it 2-1 in the 72nd minute.

With ten minutes remaining, Liverpool equalized to make it 2–2.

This time the roles were reversed as Nunez assisted Salah.

The goal means that Salah has scored in the Premier League opener six years in a row, which is a record.

In added time, Liverpool came close to deciding the game, but Jordan Henderson's long-range shot hit the crossbar.

Thus, the final score was 2–2 and the teams shared the points.
