With IK Göta as the parent club, Josefson came to represent Djurgården IF from the junior days up to the men's team.

After successful seasons in the SHL with Djurgården, he traveled across the Atlantic to play in the NHL.

In total, there were 315 NHL games, most in the New Jersey Devils.

He then made his way home to Djurgården, was appointed captain and led the team to the SC final in the 2018/19 season, where they fell short against Frölunda.

It was the second SM silver Josefson won with Djurgården (first season 2009/10).

That year, Jacob Josefson was also named the SHL's most valuable player.

In the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons, the injury problem began when Josefson only played 30 and 27 games respectively.

Last season, when Djurgården was relegated to the Hockeyallsvenskan, there were no matches at all.

That is why Josefson has now chosen to end his playing career.

- It has been a very tough decision to make, but over time I have realized that it is the only right thing to do.

I want to say a big thank you to Djurgården IF and to the world's best supporters, you will always have a big place in my heart, says Jacob Josefson to Djurgården's website.

- It is enormously sad that Jacob cannot finish on his own terms, that is, when he himself feels that the time would be right.

Now instead this comes in between, when he actually felt far from finished as a hockey player before this happened.

At the same time, we have understood for a long time that this would be the outcome, given the past year and how he was forced to end last season before it could start, says sporting director KG Stoppel.
