The Queen, who herself presented the World Cup trophy the last time the nation won a gold - the men's, 56 years ago - was not slow to congratulate the ladies after the European Championship success, more than half a century after the World Cup gold.

"My, and my family's, warmest congratulations go to all of you for winning the Women's European Football Championship.

The championship, and your achievements, have rightly been praised.

You have all set examples that will be an inspiration to girls and women today and to future generations.

It is my hope that you will be as proud of your impact on your sport as you are of the result today," writes Queen Elizabeth II.

Lineker: "A simple game"

In addition to the Queen, Harry Kane, the captain of the men's national team, among others, has sent a greeting.

"Absolutely incomparable scenes at Wembley!!

Big congratulations to the fantastic 'Lionesses'", he writes on Twitter.

Gary Lineker also tunes into the unison tribute chorus.

The 61-year-old, who himself was part of the men's national team that was eliminated against Germany in the World Cup semi-final in 1990, writes:

"Football is a simple game.

22 women chasing a ball for 90 minutes and in the end England actually win.

Congratulations.

Magically."

England won the European Championship final in front of 87,192 spectators at Wembley.

Manchester City's Chloe Kelly became a big hero when she scored the decisive 2-1 goal against Germany in extra time.
