Henrik Stenson was an outright winner in his debut competition on the criticized LIV tour of golf, which is funded by Saudi Arabia's state investment fund PIF.

"Played like a captain"

After sharing the lead with American Patrick Reed after Friday's first round and sole lead after Saturday's second round, the 46-year-old Swedish star held his game together well enough in Sunday's third and final round to win the event at the Donald Trump Course in Bedminster , New Jersey, in the United States individually.

- We can all agree that I played like a captain, says Stenson after the victory.

Invited drama

Stenson, who led by three strokes at the end, finished with a solid round that saw him total 11 under par to win by two strokes ahead of American Matthew Wolff and Dustin Johnson.

Wolff had a fantastic finish and finished the round at seven under par, but it was not enough to catch Stenson.

Stenson offered some drama when, on the penultimate hole – number seventeen – he failed to hit the green on the second shot, at a narrow two-shot lead.

But with a long putt he was able to save par on the hole.

The individual victory gives him 4 million dollars, corresponding to around 40.7 Swedish kronor, according to figures from Golf Digest.

In addition, Stenson receives additional prize money as his team Majesticks, but Englishmen Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and Sam Horsfield finished second in the Bedminster team event.
