With its huge prize checks and pared down playing schedules, the LIV Tour has attracted several of golf's biggest profiles.

This week, Swedish star Henrik Stenson became the latest in line to sign on for the controversial project.

The tour is paid for by Saudi Arabia, which ranks among the absolute worst countries in the world in terms of human rights.

This has led to a storm of criticism against, among others, Stenson - who has said that money is a big part of his decision.

Swedish golf icon Helen Alfredsson was not impressed.

- How much money do you really need?

she said after the announcement.

Trump: "Been my friends"

Stenson has been criticized in several other places.

Now, however, he and the LIV tour are being defended by Donald Trump.

He praises the project.

- I know these people in Saudi Arabia and they have been my friends for a long time, says the former US president to ESPN.

Trump has expressed his support for the project in the past.

This week's competition is also played on his own track in Bedminster.

- No one knew they would pay this much money.

Instead of getting a million (on the PGA Tour), you get seven or eight million here.

That's a lot of money and it will be even more.

The PGA Tour has not responded well to this.
