Alison Brittain has been elected president of the Premier League, a first for a woman, the organizer of the Premier League announced on Tuesday.

The appointment of Ms. Brittain, 57, was unanimously endorsed by the 20 clubs of the English elite.

She will succeed in early 2023 to Peter McCormick, the interim president since January and the resignation of Gary Hoffman due to the hostile reaction of the clubs to the takeover of the Newcastle club by a Saudi public investment fund.

Ms Brittain was previously CEO of Whitbread, a hotel and restaurant group, after a career that began in banking.

“Alison has had a positive impact on every organization she has been in (…) She has an excellent track record in business, brings projects to life with a no-nonsense style, and is respected and appreciated in every industry she has worked in” , underlined Richard Masters, the chief executive of the Premier League.
