Fifth place for Claudine Vita in the discus is the best German result so far at this World Championships in Athletics in the USA - but the hoped-for first medal was out of reach early on in the final and the disappointment, especially for Olympic silver medalist Kristin Pudenz, was huge afterwards.

Konstanze Klosterhalfen and Gesa Krause were unable to brighten the mood on the tartan track in Eugene on Wednesday (local time).

Discus, women:

The German trio clearly missed the hoped-for medal.

Claudine Vita took fifth place as the best.

The 25-year-old threw 64.24 meters in the completely surprising victory of the Chinese Bin Feng.

Shanice Craft and Olympic silver medalist Kristin Pudenz were not among the top eight after three throws and were no longer allowed to get involved in the fight for the medals.

Pudenz managed only one throw to 59.97 meters and was eleventh, the other two attempts ended up in the safety net.

Craft threw 62.35 meters and narrowly missed three more attempts in ninth place.

Feng unexpectedly won with 69.12 meters ahead of Croatia's Sandra Perkovic (68.45) and Valarie Allman (68.30) from the USA.

3000 meter obstacle:

The two-time European champion Gesa Krause was completely left behind in the final.

In 9:52.66 minutes, the 29-year-old third in the 2019 World Cup came in 15th and last place.

Krause was almost a minute slower than winner Norah Jeruto from Kazakhstan, who won in 8:53.02 minutes.

Silver and bronze went to the two Ethiopians Verkuha Getachew (8:54.61) and Mekides Abebe (8:56.08).

5000 meters, women:

Germany's world-class runner Konstanze Klosterhalfen missed the final.

In the lead-up, the time of 15:17.78 minutes was not enough for the 25-year-old from Leverkusen to get into the race of the top twelve runners.

The World Cup third of 2019 only reached 19th place.

The other two German starters were also eliminated: Alina Reh, fourth at the European Championships, finished 17th in 15:13.92 minutes, while Sarah Benfarès from LC Rehlingen finished 33rd in 16:34.23 minutes.

She had health problems because of the high temperatures and needed medical attention.

800 meters, men:

Marc Reuther clearly missed making it into the semi-finals and finished 40th out of 42 runners with a time of 1:50.75 minutes.

Marco Arop from Canada had the best performance with 1:44.56 minutes.

Javelin throwing, women:

Annika Marie Fuchs from SC Potsdam has entered the final.

In the qualification, the 25-year-old former U23 European Champion threw 59.36 meters in the second attempt and thus the ninth-best distance.

Three years ago at the World Cup in Doha, she did not survive the elimination.

The Japanese Haruka Kitaguchi threw the furthest with 64.32 meters.

The medal fight will be held on Saturday (3.35 a.m. CEST/ARD).

European champion Christin Hussong canceled participation in the World Cup as a result of illness.
