The Figure Skating Federation of Ukraine has banned the country's first Olympic champion, Viktor Petrenko, over his performances in Russia.

The reason is an ice skating show in Sochi in southern Russia, which will run until September, and in which the 53-year-old will appear.

This is organized by the wife of Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov and Olympic champion Tatyana Nawka.

"The former athlete made his shameful decision despite the bloody war that Russia is waging against Ukraine for the fifth month," the association's presidency said in a statement.

Petrenko, who was also vice-president of the association, was not deterred either by "thousands of peaceful Ukrainians who were murdered and tortured by the aggressor" or by "mass rocket attacks on our cities".

Petrenko became the first Ukrainian to win an Olympic gold medal after independence from the Soviet Union at the 1992 Winter Games in Albertville.

Born in Odessa in southern Ukraine, he has lived and worked mainly in the USA since the mid-1990s.

The same thing happened to former Bayern Munich footballer Anatoly Tymoshchuk, who was banned from playing for life in Ukraine.
