The German volleyball players missed out on the final round of the Nations League after losing to the big favorites from the USA.

The team of national coach Vital Heynen lost to the Olympic champions on Sunday (local time) in Calgary 1:3 (17:25, 13:25, 25:13, 22:25).

The German team missed out on jumping past Thailand to eighth place in the table, which entitles them to take part in the final round.

After Thailand's defeat by Italy in the afternoon there was a chance that a win would have been enough for eighth place.

But the Olympic champion and table leader USA defeated the DVV women in a sovereign manner.

The selection of the German Volleyball Association (DVV) ended the tournament after four wins and eight defeats and 14 points and, like in the previous year, took tenth place among 16 teams in the final table.

The tournament is over for them.

The USA, number one in the world rankings, are the first to advance to the women's final round, which begins on July 13 in Ankara, Turkey, ahead of Brazil and Italy.

Best German attacker on Sunday was Hanna Orthmann with 13 points.

The DVV team competed in the tournament without their longtime star attacker Louisa Lippmann, who switched to beach volleyball a few weeks ago.
