Thunderbolt at Wimbledon.

Alizé Cornet, 37th in the world, achieved the feat of beating world number 1 Iga Swiatek 6-4, 6-2, Saturday July 2, in the 3rd round of Wimbledon.

The French thus put an end to the series of 37 consecutive victories of the Polish.

"I don't have the words ... It reminds me of my victory against Serena (Williams) eight years ago on this same court which brings me luck", commented the 32-year-old Frenchwoman hotly.

"I knew I could do it. Because if there was a moment to beat her, I knew it was on grass," added Cornet.

She had reached the round of 16 of the Major on grass in 2014 by beating Serena Williams but had not passed the 3rd round in London since.

Alizé Cornet will face in the round of 16 the Australian Ajla Tomljanovic (44th), winner of the Czech Barbora Krejcikova (13th).

Iga Swiatek had not lost a match since her elimination in the second round in Dubai in February and had won the six tournaments she has played since: Doha, Indian Wells and Miami on hard, Stuttgart, Rome and Roland-Garros on clay beaten.
