The day after his victory, Wilfried Happio showed up on Sunday at 3:45 p.m. wearing big sunglasses, to receive his gold medal as French champion in the 400m hurdles on the ceremonial podium in Caen.

The 23-year-old athlete did not wish to comment on the events that occurred on Saturday, when he was attacked by a man twenty minutes from the start of his race, disputed with a blindfold over his left eye.

“This is a private dispute between two people who know each other,” a judicial source said on Sunday.

Victim of a punch in the face, "Wilfried has a micro bone fracture, but it will disappear at the same time as the bruise, he is fine," said Olivier Vallaeys, his trainer.

Happio had been admitted to the hospital after his attack, before leaving quickly, on Saturday evening.

A leader of the French Athletics Federation (FFA) went to the Caen police station on Sunday morning to file a complaint.

Qualified for World Championships in Eugene

Despite the circumstances, Happio (23) had succeeded on Saturday in beating his personal best (48”57) and validating the level of performance required by the FFA to participate in the world championships in Eugene (United States), scheduled for July 15 to 24.
