The soft sand - "feshfesh" - blocked the air filter so that the car stopped.
The TV pictures showed how the crew struggled to clean the clogged air filter from the sand.
The stretch was red-flagged due to Solberg standing in the middle of the road.
Solberg has started again after many minutes of stopping.
It is still unclear if the car was damaged.
