Auston Matthews' successful season was crowned with the award as the most valuable player of the year at the NHL Awards, the North American ice hockey league's gala night.

The other nominees were Edmonton's Connor McDavid and New York Rangers Igor Sjestiorkin.

It is the first time in 67 years that a player from Toronto is awarded the so-called Hart Trophy, the evening's finest prize.

Matthews also snagged the Ted Lindsay Award for Most Outstanding Player, after a season of 106 points in 73 games, including 60 goals.

- It feels great.

It is special to have the family here.

It is a huge honor to be blue and white and represent the city of Toronto, he says.

The best fullback of the year, and holder of the Norris Cup, was Colorado's Cale Makar, ahead of Tampa Bay's Victor Hedman and Nashville's Roman Josi.

The best newcomer in the league was Detroit's German player Moritz Seider, 21. Rangers Sjestiorkin took home the award as best goalkeeper, ahead of Jacob Markström (Calgary) and Juuse Saros (Nashville).

Even if the Swedes did not get any trophies to put on the stove, some received at least honorable mentions.

Hedman and Markström were voted into the second-highest All Star team, and 20-year-old Detroit forward Lucas Raymond took a place on the All Star team for rookies.
