The double French world champion Julian Alaphilippe will return to competition on Sunday during the French Championship, two months after his fall in Liège-Bastogne-Liège, his Quick-Step team announced on Tuesday.

World Champion @alafpolak1 has undergone further examinations at the hospital in Herentals, which have revealed that the pneumothorax he suffered as a result of the crash three weeks ago has completely healed, meaning he is able to resume light training on a set of @tacx rollers .

The presence of the puncher at the start of the Tour de France, of which he has worn the yellow jersey three times, is still uncertain.

The big start of the event will only take place five days after its return to competition, on July 1 in Copenhagen.

Alaphilippe is part, with the outgoing champion Rémi Cavagna and Florian Sénéchal, of the three riders whose Quick-Step formation announced the participation in the French Championships.

“The Tour de France option is always open, it is always in my mind”, assured the double world champion at the end of May after joining the rest of his team on an altitude course in the south of Spain.

"I can't do the same job as all the guys yet"

The French puncher, had passed a last reassuring examination before flying away for an internship.

“The good news was that my lung was fully recovered, which of course I was very happy about.

The broken bones were still painful, which is quite normal as these injuries take longer to recover,” he said.

His condition on Sunday, for his only race before his possible participation in the Tour de France, will be analyzed.

"Of course, I can't do the same job as all the guys here yet because I need time to train and get back into shape and I still have to be careful not to push my injuries too much," explained he on his arrival in Spain.
