French Football Federation President Noel Le Graet revealed that France star Kylian Mbappe had considered retiring from international football due to his criticism after his lackluster participation in the European Nations Cup (Euro 2020) last year.

Mbappe, 23, failed to score during the four matches that the French team played in the continental championship, before quitting the competition early by losing against Switzerland in the round of 16.

Mbappe, the star of the French club Paris Saint-Germain, missed the decisive penalty kick;

The world champions were eliminated from the European Nations after losing to the Swiss team on penalties, which the two teams resorted to after drawing 3-3 after resorting to extra time.

Mbappe was subjected to a lot of criticism at the time, and the president of the French Federation revealed the extent of its impact on the young star.

"I met Mbappe after the Euros, and he felt that the federation did not defend him after he missed a penalty kick and was not next to him against the criticism he faced," Le Graet told the French newspaper, Le Journal du Dimanche.

"We met for five minutes in my office, he was angry, he no longer wanted to play for the French national team, which he clearly did not mean," Le Graet added.

"You know who he is, he's a winning player, he was just as frustrated as we were all because of the exclusion. He's a friend of the media, a great guy, a much more collective player than people think," the French Football Federation president explained.

Mbappe has played 9 other international matches with the French national team since his disappointing appearance in the European Championship last year, and contributed to the crowning of his country in the European Nations League in its last edition, as well as led the team to reach the World Cup finals in Qatar this year.

Mbappe scored 27 goals in 57 international matches with France;

This made him 11th in the list of historical scorers for the "Rooster" team, led by former star Thierry Henry with 51 goals.
