The COE rules out a candidacy for 2030 only from Catalonia

If Catalonia reaffirms its desire to compete through a unilateral candidacy for the Winter Olympics, it must be in 2034, not in 2030, since the one who must present it to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is the Spanish Olympic Committee ( COE), which will not endorse any project for that appointment that is not previously agreed and, for now, broken after the refusal of the president of Aragon,

In the COE they consider it practically impossible that it can be redirected, after twice postponing the visit of the IOC evaluators.

Yesterday, however, there was one last move by Lambán, when Aragón proposed to distribute all sports in lots and let Catalonia choose first.

It will hardly be accepted by Catalonia and the COE.

If the agreement does not arrive in extremis, next week the adventure will end.

Lambán's arguments for not supporting the agreed project, in the sense that the technicians of his community were ignored and that the distribution of the tests was unequal, especially due to the fact that alpine skiing was located in Catalonia, are contradicted with what was stated by the representatives of Aragon in the technical meetings.

"Five minutes" of debate

"We understand that this option may be more than acceptable (...) Aragón manifests the position that we have been working on, as I have just publicly defended."

when asked by Blanco about his position regarding the project, at the sixth and last technical meeting, held electronically, and which concluded with the vote on the draft candidacy.

Shortly before, another of the technicians appointed by the Aragonese community,

, referred to the little conflict that the agreement had generated between them: «The technical issue had been discussed for five minutes».

The sixth and last meeting took place on March 22 and was recorded by the COE, like all the others.

Although its content has not transpired, EL MUNDO has had access to some of the statements that were made.

In fact, in this last and sixth meeting, the only one who spoke out against the terms of the agreement was the representative of Catalonia,

, because of the distribution of the ice tests.

, Minister of the Presidency of the Generalitat, rectified that refusal by means of a telephone call after that last meeting, in which the representative of the Government,

, also spoke in favour, among others .

The result was nine votes in favor and three against, although not from the representatives of Aragon.

In this way, the Aragonese community was left with 54 tests for 42 for Catalonia.

«Constructive and dialogic spirit»

Through a statement, the Government of Aragon stated that its technicians "proposed to carry out the male and female descent in Aramón-Cerler" and that, despite the request not being heeded, "they maintained the constructive and dialoguing spirit to avoid a technical blockade ».

Sources close to Lambán clarify that the aftermath of approving the project was not from the technicians, but from the political body, so the action of the Aragonese president was perfectly legitimate, not at the wrong time.

When this distribution was to begin, at the first technical meeting, on December 21, 2021, Blanco proposed to the representatives that they start working from two blocks, "cross-country skiing and biathlon in Aragon, and alpine and snow in Catalonia".

The unity of the institutions is key for the IOC in the process of granting the Games, a fact that in this case has not occurred for an appointment that will meet its headquarters next year and that have very important candidates such as Salt Lake City , Vancouver or Sapporo.
