It became a bogey already on the second hole at The Country Club in Brookline outside Boston.

He recovered to the lead through three birdies up to the tenth hole.

But then he made two bogeys in a row, on the 13th and 14th hole.

And another on the 16th hole and he also finished with a bogey.

Lingmerth went two over par for the day and is one under par overall, giving him a 16th place finish ahead of this weekend's game.

The Swede goes out the third round 20.01 on Saturday night.

However, he is no more than four strokes behind the US duo Collin Morokawa and Joel Dahmen who are in a split lead, five under par in total.

Dahlmen qualified for the US Open, a qualifier he had intended to give up because he did not think he had a chance on the difficult course.

- There were a lot of discussions before I started.

I told my wife that I would not play but then the game started to sit and I am indescribably happy, of course, says 34-year-old Dahlmen who has undergone cancer treatment according to Reuters.

Among those who climbed on Friday are last year's champion in the US Open, the Spaniard Jon Rahm, and this year's US Masters winner Scottie Scheffler, USA, who both did 67 rounds.

Phil Mickelson knocked out

15 players who took part in the Saudi-funded LIV tour in London last week started.

Phil Mickelson, who became the face of that tour, missed the cut after 78 and 73 rounds.

- I enjoyed this week but wish I had played better, says Mickelson.

Lingmerth, 592nd in the world rankings, entered the competition through qualifiers and finally came as a reserve when Martin Kaymer was forced to give up.

Sebastian Söderberg is also participating in the competition after 70 strokes on Friday.

He is an over par total and split 31st.

For Jonas Blixt and Alex Norén, it is finished after six and seven over par in their two rounds.
