Seven-time Wimbledon winner Serena Williams has been invited to take part in the next edition to be held from June 27 to July 10 after a year without playing.

The 40-year-old American, younger sister of Venus Williams, said she was "very happy to return to England", and what is more "on grass".

Serena Williams, who has not played since retiring last year in the first round of Wimbledon, has received an invitation (wild card) to participate in the next edition of the London tournament (June 27-July 10), announced Tuesday organizers.

The 40-year-old American, who won the title 7 times on the London turf, fell to 1,208th place in the world.

She had hinted in the morning that she intended to play Wimbledon this season.

“Very happy to be back on the grass”

The youngest of the Williams sisters will previously play doubles in the Eastbourne grass tournament, associated with the Tunisian Ons Jabeur (4th in the world in singles), according to the organizers of this preparatory tournament for the Major.

"I am very happy to return (to Eastbourne) to England and to be back on grass, a surface which has been so successful for me during my career", comments the American in a press release from the English Tennis Federation (LTA ).
