Michaela Meijer had a heavy season last year, she fell ill with covid-19 twice and was involved in a serious car crash.

But just over two weeks after the accident, she was selected for the Olympics in Tokyo.

This year, the athletes' great focus is on the World Cup in Euguene, USA, which begins on 15 July.

But Meijer, with a personal best of 4.83, has not had a great start to the season.

At her best, she has jumped 4.40 - 30 centimeters from the World Cup qualifying limit.

At the athletics gala Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku, Finland, tonight, Meijer applied again for the World Cup form.

But once again, the bar stayed at 4.40.

Meijer was one of four jumpers left in the competition when the bar was raised to 4.50, but the Swede was never really close to getting over.

Nina Kennedy, Australia, won at 4.65 ahead of home jumper Wilma Murto.

Meijer finished in third place.

For already World Cup-ready high jumper Maja Nilsson, on the other hand, the form curve points upwards.

The 22-year-old set a new season best by one centimeter.

The Swede, who has jumped 1.96 as the highest, finished sixth in the competition after a jump that measured 1.92.

Nicola Olyslagers, Australia, won by 1.96 ahead of Italian Elena Vallortigara and Ukrainian Yuliya Levchenko, who both managed 1.94.

In the 800 meters, Andreas Kramer, also ready for the World Cup, finished fifth in the time of 1.44.75 - less than three tenths of his Swedish record in the distance.
