Salvadoran referee Jose Arnoldo Amaya died after suffering internal bleeding after being violently attacked by players and fans after he sent off a player in an official amateur match in El Salvador.

The Salvadoran Football Association issued an official statement on Monday, condemning the physical assault of the referee by fans and players while refereeing a match at Toluca Stadium in the capital, San Salvador.

"As a federation, we condemn and condemn any acts of violence in sporting events. The Federation's Executive Committee shares the grief of the Amaya family," the federation said in its statement.

In the details of the incident, the federation explained that the referee - who belongs to the National Football Referees Union in El Salvador - was subjected to a "brutal" attack last weekend, after which he was taken to the hospital, and as a result of his severe injury, he died there.

A video clip documented the moment of the violent attack on the referee by dozens who stormed the field, and the stadium security did not reach Amaya until after he was seriously injured as a result of the bloody attack.

He was rushed to the hospital, but attempts to save him were unsuccessful and he died of his sporadic injuries.

Attacks on referees became apparent in some periodicals, as a result of the weak protection of referees, as well as the failure to take deterrent penalties against the aggressors in most cases.
