The Champions League final between Real Madrid and Liverpool on May 28 was delayed by almost 40 minutes due to the riot outside the arena which meant that several supporters did not enter the arena on time - or not at all.

At the same time, several people tried to enter the arena with invalid or no tickets at all.

People could be seen climbing over fences and a huge congestion arose whereupon the police chose to use tear gas and pepper spray.

"Obviously a failure"

The European Football Association Uefa and French authorities have received criticism from several quarters for their actions in connection with the riot, including from the final clubs Real Madrid and Liverpool.

Paris police chief Didier Lallement believes the handling was a failure.

- Obviously it's a failure.

It's a failure because people were pushed around and attacked.

It is a failure that the image of the country was undermined, he says to an investigative commission in the French Senate.

Sorry for the tear gas use

Lallement also says that he is sorry for the use of tear gas against supporters, but also says that there were no other means to ease the pressure at the entrances.

Uefa has previously apologized.

"Uefa would like to apologize to all the spectators who experienced frightening and horrible things in connection with the Champions League final in Paris.

The evening was intended to be a football party for European club team football.

No supporters should have to end up in situations like this and it must not happen again ", the union wrote on its website last week.
