Former Fifa chairman Sepp Blatter, 86, and former Uefa chief Michel Platini, 66, are accused of falsifying invoices to the latter to the value of 21 million Swedish kronor.

The plot was revived in 2015 and after a long investigation, Sepp Blatter would finally be questioned inside the courtroom in Bellinzona, Switzerland today.

At first, Blatter was seemingly alert when he walked in with his daughter Corinne and lawyer Lorenz Eni.

"I am football"

- I'm optimistic, as usual.

Given the fine weather and the fact that this is the first day of a trial that will last for almost two weeks, it would have been bad if I was not in a good mood.

I'm very confident, he said.

Just before Blatter entered the courtroom, he declared his innocence.

- Is football on my side?

I'm football.

I have served in international football for 45 years.

It's my life, my professional life.

Now I have to defend myself a little, but I will defend myself well, with a lawyer and that's all because I have a clear conscience.

Complained of chest pain

The 20-year-old Platini took his place behind Blatter, 86, who was the first to be questioned by the judges.

The problems began when Blatter spoke for himself.

Chest pain and difficulty breathing made him unable to speak.

- I do not feel good.

The pain is back and I have trouble breathing.

I do not think I can do this now, Blatter whispered.

Mr Blatter had previously left the court for a break, which he was allowed to do in view of his age but could not continue.

The court therefore decided to end the day and postpone the 86-year-old's testimony until Thursday.

Should the former football bosses be convicted, they risk up to five years in prison.
