Now the trial for the former Fifa heights begins.

First up in court is Blatter, 86, and two days later it's Platinis, 66,'s turn.

The money was paid, with Blatter's approval, to Platini with reference to consulting services for Fifa between the years 1998-2002.

Fraud, according to prosecutors who wrote that the invoice was forged while the duo themselves claim that they had a verbal agreement that Platini would be paid for his work as an adviser to Blatter.

"With Blatter's approval, Fifa paid the said sum to Platini in early 2011. The evidence gathered by the prosecution proves that this transaction was carried out without a legal basis," the prosecutors wrote according to the news agency AFP.

Elected five times

Blatter is also accused of corresponding infidelity to the principal and embezzlement, while Platini is accused of having participated in the alleged crimes.

"It's outstanding salary, Fifa owed me, based on verbal agreements and paid completely legally. Nothing else.

I have acted, as in my whole life and career, quite honestly ", counters triple Guldbollen winner Michel Platini.

The duo disagreed when Platini's campaign to succeed Blatter as chairman of Fifa escalated.

In 2015, Blatter was re-elected for the fifth time, a record within the organization.

Just days later, Swiss authorities prosecuted Blatter, who was forced to resign and who also crushed Platini's plans to become his successor.

Accused in separate indictment

Both were banned from football by Fifa's ethics committee.

Sepp Blatter was suspended for eight years, which was later reduced to six years.

In 2021, he was suspended for another six years.

Michel Platini, for his part, was suspended for eight years, a verdict he appealed to the sports arbitration court, Cas, which reduced the sentence to four years.

Should they be sentenced, the duo risks a prison sentence of up to five years as well as heavy fines.
