Alexander Zverev has had surgery on his right ankle after his painful exit from the Roland-Garros semi-finals.

The German, now world number 2, was injured at the end of the second set against Rafael Nadal and had to give up.

The 25-year-old hasn't said when he will be back on court but according to

L'Equipe

he is expected to be out for between six and eight weeks.

No Wimbledon, then.

It's part of mine,” Zverev wrote on Instagram Tuesday night, along with a photo of him giving a thumbs up from a hospital bed.

“After further examination in Germany, we received confirmation that all three lateral ligaments in my right ankle were torn.

To return to competition as quickly as possible, to ensure the proper healing of all the ligaments and to regain total stability of my ankle, surgery was the best choice,” he explained.

Zverev should be able to play at the US Open, which begins on August 29, if he recovers as expected.
