The International Skating Federation has decided to raise the minimum age for senior figure skating competitions from 15 to 17 years old.

This is to prevent a second Balieva incident.

The International Ice Skating Federation has decided to raise the age of participation in figure skating senior competitions by one year from the next season, so that from the 2024-25 season, only 17-year-olds can compete.

This is because of the doping scandal in Balieva, Russia, that broke out at the Beijing Olympics in February.

Baliyeva was controversially allowed to compete in the Olympics despite testing positive for her doping test because she was under 16 at the time and had no self-control over her drug use.

With this decision, only 17-year-olds can participate in the 2026 Winter Olympics, but Korea's Shin Jia, a silver medalist at the World Junior Championships, is currently 14 years old and has no problem participating in the next Olympics.
