French soccer star Karim Benzema has dropped an appeal against his conviction in the sex tape affair.

His lawyer Hugues Vigier confirmed to the AFP news agency that the 34-year-old footballer accepted his sentence of one year's probation.

The affair involved an attempted blackmail against Benzema's former team-mate Mathieu Valbuena.

Benzema was therefore sentenced to a fine of 75,000 euros in the first instance last November in addition to the suspended sentence.

In addition to Benzema, four other men who had orchestrated the extortion attempt were sentenced to between 15 months and two and a half years in prison.

One of them discovered and kept the video during a data transfer from Valbuena's cell phone to a new phone.

The men threatened Valbuena to release the video to extort money.

Benzema, who won the Champions League for the fifth time with Real Madrid on May 28, had met with Valbuena and suggested he go through a "trustworthy person".

He had emphasized that this was merely "friendly advice".

The judges, however, ruled that Benzema had shown "no kindness whatsoever" towards Valbuena, but rather acted "excitedly and with enthusiasm".

The scandal shook the French national team in 2015, both Benzema and Valbuena had to leave the team.

Benzema has since been pardoned by national coach Didier Deschamps.

He was the only person to appeal his conviction and originally said he wanted to appear in court at the end of June.
