The Algerian judiciary requests the imprisonment of football legend Rabah Madjer

The Algerian judiciary demanded yesterday that the former star of the "Desert Warriors" football team be imprisoned for 18 months, during his ongoing trial for fraud.

The 63-year-old Madjer, who was famous for scoring a goal for the Portuguese team Porto in the victory over Bayern Munich 2-1 in the final of the European Champions League (the European Champions League competition with its old name) in 1987 with his heels and took over the Algerian national team, is being tried on several charges.

Besides fraud, Majer has also been charged with forgery and making false statements, according to media reports.

Majer, who owned two newspapers, is accused of continuing to collect bank revenues from public advertising for a year after the two newspapers were closed.

The Algerian National Agency for Publication and Advertising demanded the return of fees, as well as compensation.

A verdict is expected on the ninth of June.
