The Frankfurt basketball players of the Fraport Skyliners remain first class despite the sporting relegation.

The Hessians received a wildcard for the upcoming Bundesliga season on Thursday.

A corresponding decision by the club representatives of the BBL working group was unanimously confirmed by the shareholders' meeting.

"We thank you for the clear vote.

This touches and motivates us a lot,” said Frankfurt's managing partner Gunnar Wöbke.

The Frankfurters, who finished the 2021/22 season penultimate in the table, were the only applicants for a wildcard.

"We are pleased that the Frankfurt location can still be found on the BBL map - not only because there is a very solid economic base, but because the club also sets clear accents in the youth field, both in terms of breadth and in the top ", said BBL Managing Director Stefan Holz.

The club has to pay 700,000 euros to the BBL for the Bundesliga return at the green table.

“We have already been promised more than half of the wild card sum in a short space of time.

For the rest, the club and its shareholders are initially taking the risk," said Skyliners Managing Director Yannick Binas.

In order to be successful again in the Bundesliga, the club must generate an additional seven-digit amount over the next two years.
