Richard Carapaz, from Ecuador, and Jai Hindley were some of the last out in the starting field in the final stage of the Giro d'Italia in Verona.

It was individual time cycling, and Hindley had a 1 minute and 25 seconds advantage after taking the lead in front of Caparaz after the penultimate stage on Saturday.

All he needed to do on Sunday was avoid mistakes.

Caparaz did what he could and was six seconds faster than his biggest opponent, but Hindley's lead became too big.

When the Australian, who ran a stable race, finished, it was clear that he had won the tour.

The stage winner was Italian Matteo Sobrero, who was the fastest in the 17.4 kilometers.

Hindley's time was just over 90 seconds slower than Sobreros and gave him a 15th place in the stage.
