After the arrival of midfielder Ilkay Gündogan at the training camp in Marbella, national soccer coach Hansi Flick can now work with the entire 26-man squad.

The 31-year-old Gündogan was allowed to arrive a day later after winning the championship in England with Manchester City last Sunday.

Flick had given him one more day to celebrate in England.

"I was really happy for Ilkay," said Flick about the success of Gündogan, who with Manchester City narrowly won the long-distance duel with Liverpool for coach Jürgen Klopp on the last matchday of the Premier League.

Gündogan became the match winner in the 3-2 win against Aston Villa after being 2-0 down as a substitute and scoring twice.

“I watched the Premier League Champions Conference on TV and was happy for Ilkay.

He initiated the comeback and ultimately shot Man City to the championship.

I'm happy for him.

That also shows the quality he has,” said Flick.

Gündogan is considered a fixed point in Flick's squad for the World Cup in Qatar.

On Wednesday, the DFB team continued the preparations for the upcoming four Nations League games against European champions Italy (4th and 14th June), the EM runners-up England (7th June) in the "Marbella Football Center" in camera. and Hungary (June 11).

Gündogan at EM 2024?

In an interview broadcast on Sport1, Gündogan left his future in the DFB team open after the World Cup in Qatar.

"I've said before that I'll make the decision after the World Cup.

If I'm physically and mentally in the right shape, I can also imagine playing the EM 2024," said the 31-year-old.

However, there is still a long way to go before the European Championships at home and there are many games with the club and national team that require a lot of energy.

So we'd rather talk about that again in early 2023," added Gündogan.

The Nations League games would have “great importance for us in many ways.

It's about points and a possible title, that must be motivation enough for every athlete," emphasized Gündogan.

In addition, there were “only six competitive games left before the start of the World Cup in Qatar.

In these duels it will also be about finding each other and preparing for the World Cup in the best possible way.” Since Germany has “unfortunately lost its status as a tournament team in recent years”, Gündogan continued, such games in the run-up are “all the more important for self-confidence more decisive".

He himself knows “that I have a certain responsibility within the team.

When I'm fit, I can help the team with my quality and experience."

Gündogan also commented on the championship fight in the Premier League in the interview.

He described his last goal in the season finale, which secured Manchester City's title win, as the most important goal of his career.

"Based on the outcome, I would say yes - and definitely one of my most emotional ones," said the midfielder.

"On Sunday, a lot of the burden was lifted because we struggled so hard for the entire 90 minutes and we knew that Liverpool was breathing down our necks."

Klopp was "one of the first" to congratulate him on winning the title.

“We have always treated each other with the utmost respect.

He had another very good season with Liverpool and made life extremely difficult for us.

He's just an outstanding guy and coach, he's been showing that for many years," praised Gündogan.
