The Czech professional cyclist Jan Hirt has won the 16th leg of the Giro d'Italia.

On the 202-kilometer king's stage over 5250 meters in altitude from Salo to Aprica, the 31-year-old prevailed with a seven-second lead over Dutchman Thymen Arensman.

In the overall standings, Richard Carapaz of Ecuador retained the leader's pink jersey but is just three seconds ahead of Kämna's Australian team-mate and third of the day, Jai Hindley.

Lennard Kämna was the best German in seventh (+1:38).

The 25-year-old once again showed a strong performance and was part of the leading group throughout the race.

Halfway through the stage on the dreaded Mortirolo, the North German was one of the most active riders.

About 21 kilometers from the finish, Kämna pulled away from three escape companions.

Before the last climb he even managed to get a 50 second lead, but he couldn't hold it.

He was overtaken by Hirt on the last climb, the Santa Cristina, which was particularly steep in the second part, a few kilometers before the climb.

Meanwhile, his teammate Emanuel Buchmann suffered a minor setback in the fight for a top 10 finish.

The 29-year-old Ravensburger fell back from the group of favorites on the last climb and fell back to eighth place overall (+4:45), but can still hope for the first German top-10 placement at the Giro since 1983.

However, the 29-year-old is only 4:01 minutes from the podium.

The next of a total of three mountain stages to be mastered is already scheduled for Wednesday.

On the 165-kilometer route from Ponte di Legno to Lavarone, 3730 meters of altitude await the drivers.

The tour ends on May 29th in Verona.
