Ellen van Dijk from the Netherlands has set a world hour record.

The 35-year-old cyclist covered 49.254 kilometers in the Grenchen velodrome on Monday, significantly improving the mark of 48.405 kilometers set by the British rider Joscelin Lowden in September 2021.

Van Dijk was faster than Lowden practically from the start on the Swiss track and continuously increased their lead.

The record for men is held by Belgian Victor Campenaerts with a distance of 55.089 kilometers in Aguascalientes, Mexico.

For van Dijk, the record is another milestone in her successful career.

The Trek-Segafredo rider is the current world champion in individual time trials and European road cycling champion.

Overall, van Dijk was twice world champion in the individual time trial, four times European champion in the same discipline and four times world champion in the team time trial.

On the track, she won World Championship gold in scratch in 2008.
