Portugal's Peseiro appointed as Nigeria coach

The Nigeria Football Federation has appointed Jose Santos Peseiro as the new coach of the national team, six weeks after the resignation of the previous coach.

The Nigerian Football Association said in a statement that the appointment of the 62-year-old coach is effective immediately pending the signing of the contract terms.

He added that Peseiro, who played as a striker during his football career, "has extensive and varied experience in coaching major clubs and national teams on four different continents, namely Europe, Asia, Africa and South America."

The new coach will lead the "Excellent Eagles" team in the next two friendlies with Mexico and Ecuador, after he left his position as coach of the Venezuelan national team last August for not receiving his salary for a year.

The federation said that Peseiro will be supported by a technical staff that includes former Nigerian international strikers Fenedi George, Ike Churonmo and Salisu Yusuf.

The former coach of the national team, Augustin Iguafuin, and his assistants resigned last March, after failing to qualify for the Qatar World Cup 2022, after Ghana eliminated them on the away goal advantage rule.

This was the first time that Nigeria had failed to qualify for the World Cup finals since 2006.

Nigerian fans criticized the tactics of the 56-year-old former international defender Iguafuin, who was appointed as the coach of the team temporarily last December, following the sacking of German-French Gernot Rohr. .
