La Liga
has an economic problem called
FC Barcelona
.
It's hard but obvious.
Even more so when the numbers for the
2020-2021 season
of the organization chaired by
Javier Tebas
are known .
The
Covid-19
pandemic and the financial situation of the Catalan team completely weigh down the health of the Spanish competition, robust and solid apart from the club chaired by
Joan Laporta
.
The domestic tournament has today published its
Economic-Financial Report for
the 2020-21 academic year and has presented
losses of 892 million euros
, of which
481
,
54%
, belong solely and exclusively to Barça.
This is the first season since 2012 in which La Liga admits losses after some very positive years:
52 million
profit in 19-20,
225
in 18-19 or
188
in 17-28.
A worrying figure that will force the Barça board to maintain
the 1-4 rule
, that is, enter four million to be able to spend one.
The classification for the
next Champions
It will oxygenate the accounts for this season a bit and the agreement with the
CVC fund
remains as an emergency solution.
At the Camp Nou they do not see it clear to sign said investment and prefer to exhaust other ways, including the sale of the
Barça Studios
project or the transfer of one of the most important players in the squad, such as
Frenkie de Jong.
In La Liga, however, they slip the need for that signature and hope that Laporta and his board will join the rest of the team.
In that case,
Real Madrid
would be the only club in the Santander League to stay out
of the investment
of more than 24,000 million over
50 years
that CVC plans.
"We cannot ignore the
delicate situation
that a benchmark club is going through at an economic-financial level. The notable relevance and economic scale of that entity
determines the poor results
of LaLiga as a whole. However, we have no doubt that in the coming years this institution will return to the path of balance and solvency", declared
Javier Tebas
.
The Covid and the transfer market, keys
The solutions to the
financial problems of Barça
(and the League) are still not clear, but the causes are.
The
closure of the stadiums
, the loss of
ticket
money and the rest of the difficulties added by the
Covid
have meant, according to the League, "between 75 and 90%" of the negative effects of the season's numbers.
A reality that, together with the drop in
the transfer market,
has reduced the
total income
of the teams to
3,818 million
euros, by 5,029 in 19-20 and 4,874 in 18-19.
"Without the Covid, those incomes would have increased to 5,166," they estimate from LaLiga.
"Under these environmental conditions,
the surprising thing is that we are still standing
, "admits Tebas. "But the truth is that we are still standing and we are even stronger."
The clubs of our country have registered a
net investment of 300 million
, the lowest record in the last six seasons.
A fact directly related to the lower risk that entities take in their movements, something that LaLiga calls the '
Automatic Business Stabilizer
'.
By not selling players, the decision is made not to sign and
not to increase the debt even more
.
For this reason, despite the losses in the competition, the
net debt
has only increased by
236 million
, from 1,710 in 19-20 to 1,946 in 20-21.
In fact, in the 2020-21 academic year, the net investment in players in Spanish football was only
5 million euros
.
Soccer players have been bought for 547 million and have been sold for 542. To compare with previous years, in 19-20 the net investment was 405 (1,533 transfers and 1,128 sales).
Television rights, oxygen balloon
The clubs' attitude towards the market has to do directly with the financial control carried out by the League and puts some hope in the future.
For the 21-22 campaign, the Spanish organization already estimates a
total income of 4,021
(+5% compared to this year) and losses that will largely depend on the solutions Barça seeks to its situation.
From the Tebas entity, where they still
cannot give data on what the clubs will be able to spend
in this summer market, they speak of "
recovery
" for the 21-22 season and "
normalization
" for 23-24, being "
key
" for LaLiga the direct boost that the money from
the CVC fund
has meant , the creation of
LaLiga Tech
(a company that will channel the digital ecosystem of the competition), the
sponsorship agreements
in America and the sale of
television rights
, something that continues to increase.
In 2013-14 LaLiga obtained
840 million selling its games
, while between 2019 and 2021 the annual average was 1,853 and from next season it is estimated that it will exceed
2,000 million
.
In general, it is a suffering similar to what the rest of the
major leagues in Europe
are experiencing .
The Premier has lost 1,438 million
last year, for the
1,795 in Series A
or the
900 in Ligue 1,
of which 250 million are only from PSG.
It is not the situation of Barça, but the Parisian team completely conditions the French championship.
According to UEFA, the accumulated deterioration in turnover in the two seasons affected by Covid in European professional football amounts to
7,000 million
.
An economic drama from which Spanish football is slowly coming out.
