For many, the name Fifa has become synonymous with the video game that is released every year.
But now it will soon be over.
Today, the New York Times announced that EA Sports and Fifa, after almost 30 years of cooperation, have not agreed on a new agreement.
Wanted over 1.5 billion extra
Instead, the video game company will in future publish the games under the name EA FC.
The reason is that the negotiations between EA Sports and Fifa broke down.
According to the New York Times, Fifa has at least wanted to double the 150 million dollars (just over 1.5 billion kronor) that they received each year from EA Sports (which is Fifa's largest commercial partner) during the ten years that the latest agreement applies.
In addition, Fifa wanted to get its brand on more of EA Sports' products, which the company did not want to agree to.
Player name remains
How much it will be felt for the players, however, is unclear.
EA Sports has separate agreements with several organizations, including Uefa.
Thus, the team and player names of most big stars.
However, as it stands now, Fifa's tournaments (such as the World Cup) will not be playable.
But that can change if a separate agreement can be concluded.
- We would love to be able to continue to have the World Cup in the game, says EA manager Andrew Wilson.
The last edition of EA Sports Fifa will be released in September.
