He had been waiting for this moment since February 8, 2021, and a success in the first round of the Australian Open against the Portuguese Pedro Sousa.

After 15 months of scarcity, Stan Wawrinka again won a victory, this Monday at the Masters 1000 in Rome.

The 37-year-old Swiss veteran beat American giant Reilly Opelka (3-6, 7-5, 6-2) in three sets, after trailing 3-6, 2-4.

A great performance against the 17th in the world for the former No. 3, now 361st at ATP after a drop of 115 places in one week.

It was with a big ovation that the center court of Rome greeted the return to victory of the triple Grand Slam winner (Australian Open 2014, Roland-Garros 2015, US Open 2016) after 2h05 of play.

She's doing good there!

Wawrinka had ended his 2021 year after a first round elimination in Doha in March.

During these long months, he treated an injury to his left foot that he had been dragging on since 2019. In 2022, "Stan the Man" had lost as soon as he entered the competition in the only two tournaments he had played, in Marbella then Monte- Carl.

In the second round in Rome, the Swiss who is no longer underground will meet either the Croatian Borna Coric (262nd in the world, benefiting from a protected ranking), or the Serbian Laslo Djere (58th).
