It was at the end of April that the Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe and several other cyclists were involved in a mass crash during the Liege-Bastogne-Liege race.

Alaphilippe crashed into a tree and landed in a ditch, out of sight of the team and the medical team.

Then compatriot and competitor Romain Bardet tried to call for help and then climbed down to Alaphilippe to check on him.

- When I looked around, Julian was five, six meters down the slope and it was an emotional shock to see him like that because he was in a bad condition.

No one helped him and he really needed help.

It was an emergency.

He could not move and could not breathe, Bardet said according to Eurosport after the crash.

Received fair play prize

Before the start of the Giro d'Italia, Bardet was praised on Friday with a fair play prize and a diploma for sacrificing his own efforts when he helped Alaphilippe.

- I think that anyone in the same situation would have done the same thing.

There is no rivalry when there is a risk of injury, he says according to the site Cycling News.
