Corona pandemic forces the postponement of the “Hangju 2022” Asian Games

More than two years after the beginning of its outbreak, the Corona virus pandemic is still casting a shadow over some international sporting events, the latest of which is the indefinite postponement of the “Hangju 2022” Asian Games, which were scheduled in China next September, according to what the organizers announced Friday.

The Olympic Council of Asia announced in a statement that "after a detailed discussion with the Chinese Olympic Committee and the Organizing Committee of the Asian Games in Hangzhou, the Executive Office of the Olympic Council of Asia decided today to postpone the 19th Asian Games, which were scheduled in Hangzhou, China from September 10 to 25."

He added that the new date for the continental event, in which more than ten thousand athletes participate, "will be announced in the near future."

China is recently facing a new wave of infections with the Covid-19 virus, which has led to the closure of many cities and the confinement of millions of residents in their homes.

The continental body noted that "the Organizing Committee of the Games was fully prepared to hold the Games on time despite the global challenges. However, this decision was taken by all partners after carefully considering the situation of the pandemic and the size of the Games."
