Diego Maradona wrote sports history with the "Hand of God", his jersey from the quarter-finals of the 1986 World Cup is now a case for the record books: The auction house Sotheby's auctioned off the jersey of the Argentine soccer icon, who died in 2020, this Wednesday for around 9, 3 million dollars (8.8 million euros).
Seven bidders took part in the online auction, which began April 20 and ended Wednesday morning, Sotheby's said.
The starting bid was $5 million.
Doubts from Maradona's daughter
The most expensive jersey in sports history to date was that of baseball legend Babe Ruth of the New York Yankees, which fetched $5.6 million in 2019.
Maradona had scored two goals against England in the blue number 10 shirt.
He scored one goal with the "Hand of God", the second after a sensational solo.
Maradona's daughter had expressed doubts about the auction before the auction.
According to her, Maradona only wore the shirt on sale in the goalless first half.
Sotheby's stressed that they had the "right" jersey.
The shirt was owned by former England international Steve Hodge, who swapped it with Maradona after the game.
The jersey had been on display at the National Football Museum in Manchester for 20 years.
