British motorsport pioneer Brooks dies at 90

British motorsport pioneer Tony Brooks has died at the age of 90.

The dentist was the last surviving Formula One Grand Prix winner in the 1950s and finished second in the 1959 World Championships. "I was deeply saddened to hear of the death of Tony Brooks," Formula One CEO Stefano Domenicali said in a statement. A pioneer of drivers who overcame all odds in a period that saw so many dangers in the sport.”

The BBC said the news of Brooks' death was announced by his daughter, Julia.

Brooks won six Grand Prix races during one of the sport's most accident-ridden periods, making his championship debut with the BRM team in 1956 and retiring in 1961 at the age of 29.

He also defended the colors of the Fanwall, Ferrari and Cooper teams.
