The application of the Russian Football Union (RFU) was found not to meet the requirements, according to the UEFA website.

It is noted that, according to article 16.02 of the regulations for applications, the country claiming to host the tournament must act in such a way as not to potentially cause damage to UEFA, other participants in the competition and European football in general.

In addition, the eventual acceptance of the application would mean automatic qualification of Russia for the Euro as its host, but there is a risk of controversy, given the uncertainty over the timing of the lifting of sanctions on Russian football.

"The UEFA Executive Committee will remain on standby to hold additional meetings to reassess the legal and factual situation as it develops and take further decisions if necessary," the statement reads.

Earlier it was reported that Russia was excluded from the League of Nations.
