At the time of writing, the Swedish Athletics Association is the only one in the world that has not included the branch in its activities.

But soon that will change.

After both federations have voted in favor of operating under a joint special federation (the Swedish Athletics Federation), it will become a formal reality on 1 April next year.

Perseus Karlström, who won the World Cup bronze in 2019, believes that the decision will mean a big boost for the sport.

"Very important"

- I think it is very important for walking.

It also feels natural when we are always out with athletics at big competitions.

We have seen that there is interest in athletics clubs and among children and young people.

But with so few associations and such a small union, it has been difficult to reach out.

Now it will be much easier.

The 31-year-old has long been critical of his sport being kept out.

- I have a lot of international friends who have written to me and said: how can you not be the same union?

It's completely crazy.

It's a great relief now.

I'm extremely happy that it's finally happening.

"Did not think I would experience it"

Karlström followed the crucial board meeting digitally this weekend and became very emotional when the decision was final.

- It is something that we competition fighters have fought for ... I have fought for it ever since I understood the question when I became a senior in 2010. I did not think I would get to experience it while I was still competitive.
