Modern football is currently going through an unprecedented phase of financial and competitive imbalance in light of the domination of the game by the super-rich clubs, a situation that has become worse than ever, and is getting worse in a way that may make it irreparable.

The British newspaper The Independent reported that the adoption of excessively capitalist and unregulated football has created growing financial inequality that is destroying the unpredictability inherent in the sport.

And it's not just the big clubs that win as often as they did long ago, but there is a small group of super-rich clubs that are now financially unique, to the point that they win more games than ever before, score goals, and even break even more numbers since when.

According to the newspaper, these clubs caused the transformation and change of the entire football due to the excessive use of money, which means, for example, that in order to start the competition you need a minimum annual revenue of around 400 million euros in 2020, according to figures from the consulting office Deloitte. .

And the newspaper considered that when clubs such as Liverpool or Manchester City work to maximize this revenue through impressive intelligence, the disparity has a greater impact.

She pointed out that the gap is increasing especially on the field, which makes us witness many historical records being broken season after season, especially during the past decade, which was marked by a real renaissance for these outrageously rich clubs and an enormous increase in the amount of money that was pumped into the game.

Record numbers over the past decade

The newspaper mentioned a set of records witnessed in the past decade in conjunction with the increasing wealth of some clubs:

  • Triple titles for the second time in Spain in one season.

  • Triple titles for the first time in Germany.

  • Triple titles for the first time in Italy.

  • The first trilogy of domestic titles in England.

  • 3 triple titles in France in 4 years.

  • The first European Champions League win 3 times in a row in 42 years.

  • First ever 100-point season in Spain, Italy and England.

  • Thirteen of the 54 European leagues currently have the longest winning streak by a single team or the longest period of dominance.

The newspaper stresses that many of these achievements seemed impossible to achieve for decades, but they all happened now at about the same time in the past decade, with more of them expected in the future, and it goes without saying that they were all achieved by the wealthiest clubs in the respective leagues.

She pointed out that the concentration of money led to the concentration of quality and thus success in the hands of a limited number of clubs, but this does not mean that there are no exceptions to this rule, such as the disappointing seasons that Manchester United and Arsenal suffered recently, or the unexpected achievements of clubs such as Leicester City.

As long as the system is based on the human factor, it is natural that there will be fluctuations, highs and lows, and that the long-term indicators do not achieve complete consistency, because this is simply not the way things are going.
