Chengdu Universiade proposes carbon neutrality target

News from this newspaper (China Youth Daily, China Youth Daily reporter Wang Xinxin, intern Lei Yan) The venues can not be rebuilt, and those that can be repaired will not be replaced, and more than 80% of the traffic support vehicles use new energy vehicles... On April 22, Chengdu No. 1 The Executive Committee of the 31st Summer Universiade (hereinafter referred to as "Chengdu Universiade") released a special action plan for green and low-carbon competition.

The Chengdu Universiade will be held from June 26 to July 7 this year.

The action plan outlines 34 key tasks in five areas: energy, venues, transportation, operations, and participation.

Yang Binping, chief engineer of the Chengdu Municipal Bureau of Ecology and Environment, said that a series of measures should be taken to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality in the event, and to make the Chengdu Universiade a green and low-carbon sports event.

Taking venue construction as an example, the Chengdu Universiade involves 49 venues, of which 13 are newly built and 36 are renovated.

In the renovation of 36 venues, Chengdu promoted the concept of green energy saving.

For example, the Xindu Xiangcheng Sports Center is paved with permeable concrete, which can convert the collected and processed rainwater into water for the greening and maintenance of the venue. It is estimated that more than 3,000 tons of water can be saved throughout the year, and the annual water consumption of the venue is reduced by about 20%.

The above action plan puts forward specific requirements for many details of the preparation and holding of the event.

For example, the Executive Committee requires the competition equipment to be mainly sponsored and leased. The apartments of the Universiade Village delegation use green cleaning products and low-value consumables, and the frequency of changing and washing towels and linens is reduced to once every 3 days.

Preliminary calculations show that the total carbon emissions during the preparation, holding and post-competition of the Chengdu Universiade are about 300,000 tons. By implementing source control measures such as renewable electricity replacement, green and low-carbon buildings, and the use of new energy vehicles, carbon emissions will be reduced by 2.3%. million tons.

Yang Binping said that these carbon emissions are expected to be offset through the forestry carbon sink provided by the Longquan Mountain Urban Forest Park, as well as the carbon emission reductions of the "Carbon Benefit Tianfu" mechanism and the state-certified carbon emission reductions to promote the realization of carbon neutrality in the event. and target.
